Iceland
The world-famous necropants, and many other displays detail the dark superstitions of 17th century Iceland.
The Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft details the history and folklore of sorcery in the country. Here, you’ll find artefacts and displays including carved runes, animal skulls, magical staves, and the only Viking ritualistic stone ever found in Iceland. Then there are the tilberi - fuzzy demons grown from a stolen bone and stolen wool that would steal milk from the neighbors and vomit up butter for its creator. These artefacts are tied to the very real persecution of witches and sorcerers in the country, which started with Jón Rögnvaldsson being burned at the stake in 1652 for raising a zombie (also on display). However, the museum best known for the “necropants” on display. Essentially leggings made by flaying an exhumed friend, they are said to bring the wearer unlimited wealth courtesy of a coin and rune kept in the scrotum.
