Thanks to Ali Pasha and wealthy Byzantine families, Ioannina is renowned for its rich cultural heritage.
Founded in the 6th century, Ioannina flourished under both the Byzantine period, when many wealthy families came fleeing the sack of Constantinople, and the Ottomans when it was an epicenter of the modern Greek Enlightenment. The city’s wealthy and aristocratic heritage stemmed the colloquialism “to live like the Pasha in Ioannina”. Today, the influence of Ali Pasha can be felt throughout the city. The city’s 6th century castle guards the Fetiche Mosque, where visitors can learn about the city’s influential ruler, and see the graves of Ali Pasa and his first wife. Visitors can also take a ferry to the lake island where Ali Pasha was assassinated, which, along with a quiet village, houses a museum dedicated to the visionary leader. The city is also renowned for its gastronomy, so visitors would be remiss not to try the local specialties, such as frog’s legs, sugary pastries, and perhaps the world’s only alcohol-free liqueur.
