While its first mention was in 1151, evidence found in the cellars suggests that parts of the castle could date back as far as the 1st century B.C.
Formerly property of the Bishops of Aosta, Issogne Castle saw extensive renovations throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, obtaining its current appearance around 1510 under George of Challant, who restored and transformed the castle into a luxurious residence for his cousin. Upon entering the castle, visitors will be greeted by the courtyard’s painted walls and famous wrought-iron pomegranate tree fountain, the symbol of the Challant family. This castle is riddled with magnificent frescoes depicting scenes of daily life from the late Middle Ages. Visitors will have the chance to see, among many of the castle’s impressively preserved features, the ground floor dining room and kitchen, the first floor chapel with finely decorated, pointed arch vaults and Gothic altar, and the second floor rooms with beautifully coffered ceilings. The castle is closed on Mondays, and daily from 1:00-2:00 pm, October through March.
