Itaugua

Home to one of the prettiest historic centers in the country, this colonial town is famous for its traditional, spiderweb-like lacework.

About

Founded in 1728, Itauguá has held tight to its historic identity. The city center is considered one of the prettiest in all of Paraguay thanks to its elegant Colonial architecture. Just pay a visit to the elegant Virgen del Rosario Church before wandering the mostly-pedestrian surrounding streets to immerse yourself in its charms. The San Rafael Museum is also worth a visit - originally dedicated to saving the treasures of an old Franciscan church it’s since expanded its scope to include religiously-themed painting, wood carvings of saints, a large variety of historic furniture. There’s also an exhibit dedicated to the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia. However, Itauguá is best known for its traditional lacework, known as ñandutí, which is the native Guaraní word for “spider’s web”. Delicate and intricate as its name suggests, the city is a delight for craft-lovers, especially in July when they hold the ñandutí festival.
