Iwakuni

Enveloped by natural beauty, Iwakuni invites exploration of its lush landscapes, including diverse plant life in the Mt. Shiroyama nature preserve.

About

Iwakuni, a quaint city in southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture, is famed for its unique Kintai-kyo Bridge, a marvel that entices visitors year-round and truly shines during the cherry blossom season in early April. Once a feudal domain during the Edo Period, Iwakuni boasts a reconstructed mountaintop castle that adds to its allure. Crossing the bridge is a must, with options of a 310 yen round trip or a 970 yen pass including access to the bridge, entry to Iwakuni Castle, and a ropeway round-trip. This pass extends discounts to attractions like the Kikkawa Historical Museum, Iwakuni Art Museum, and White Snake Museum. Amidst its charm, Iwakuni showcases the annual Kintai Bridge Festival on April 29th, featuring samurai-costumed parades and historic reenactments. Iwakuni's cultural richness also extends to its preserved castle town ambience, the serene Ogasawara Tea Garden, and the intriguing White Snake of Iwakuni. Perched atop Mount Shiroyama, Iwakuni Castle, rebuilt in 1962, is a museum displaying armor, weapons, and artworks depicting war. For a taste of local delicacies and ambiance, dining at Hangetsu, a traditional restaurant dating back to 1869, is recommended.
