Janeda Manor

A manor composes the heart of the Jäneda village, where aristocratic families and political figures have traversed its grounds and a museum now welcomes history buffs and architectural appreciators alike.

About

The Jäneda Manor is a historical estate founded in 1510, surrounded by picturesque Estonian countryside and forests. It moved through the ownership of noble families until its current Art Nouveau and neo-Gothic design was added in 1913 and a furnished planetarium was added in 1922. It is best known for housing Countess and Baroness Maria Zakrevskaya Benckendorff, a Russian adventuress suspected of being a double agent of the Soviet Union secret police, in the early 1900’s. An agricultural school was then founded in 1928, where previous Estonian president Arnold Rüütel studied, and continues to be in operation today. The estate features a number of outbuildings and gardens that are open free to the public. These include a distillery, a dairy, and a number of farm buildings that offer a glimpse into the daily lives of Estonia's rural residents. To enter the museum and uncover the fascinating history of the manor, groups must book ahead for €50.
