Sri Lanka
Built by Japanese Buddhist monks with the purpose of promoting world peace, this elegant white and gold temple offers divine views of the Indian Ocean.
The Japanese Peace Pagoda is perfectly located on the serene and legendary Rumassala hill between the cities of Galle and Unawatuna. One of four Peace Pagodas in Sri Lanka, and 80 that exist in the world, it was built under the guidance of the Japanese Buddhist monk Nichidatsu Fujii (1885 - 1985) founder of the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order. True to its name, the Peace Pagodas were created as symbols to unite all people of all nationalities and races in the search for world peace. Located atop the Rumassala Hill, the scenic views are indeed enlightening. Climb the white marbled steps to the magnificent Pagoda and you will be greeted by four colorful Buddha statues and a tranquil view across the Indian Ocean as well as the surrounding biodiverse rainforest.
