United Arab Emirates
This abandoned village is a reminder of a time-gone-by, now said to be haunted by flesh-eating spirits.
Al Jazirah al Hamra was a small village that primarily subsisted off of pearl fishing. A series of territorial disputes between Sheikhs put the town in limbo, and in 1968, it was abandoned en masse. While the official reason is that the townsfolk accepted an offer from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to move to Abu Dhabi, many UAE citizens believe there was another reason for the exodus: the town is haunted by djinn. During the day, the abandoned village is a fascinating place to wander to get a glimpse at traditional Emerati life - keep an eye out for the coral used in construction. Other visitors come thrill-seeking, hoping to experience the chill hand of the village’s spectral inhabitants.
