Jedars

Feel the mystery of history walking among these enigmatic tombs.

About

The Jedars are 13 pre-Islamic tombs built sometime between the 4th and 7th centuries. Originating from the Arabic word “jidar”, or ancient ruins, the similarities to smaller tombs in the region suggest they were of Berber origin and their commanding size and elevated position suggest they were likely built for royalty. Over the years, researchers and excavators have tried to uncover the secrets and stories hidden in these ancient pyramids, but having been plundered centuries ago with most markings and inscriptions scrubbed away, they remain a mystery. And that’s the real draw here. Walking among these enigmatic structures you can feel the weight of history, while the tombs’ secrets remain lost in time. One of the few hints you’ll get are some murals of religious scenes associated with 5th century Christianity on one of the larger Jedars.
