A small floating sign claims that the waters here are the true source of the Nile. This deceivingly innocuous sign stands as the only reminder of an incredibly tumultuous debate that raged during the Age of Explorers. In the 19th century John Hanning Speke claimed to have found the source of the Nile in Jinja. This claim would lead to a furious debate back in Britain that would turn friend into enemy and consume the scientific community. This conflict would only end with the mysterious death of Speke before a public debate on the matter. Jinja is no stranger to death as it is also the final resting place for a large contingency of European and African soldiers who perished during the first and second world wars. Despite, it’s somewhat morbid past, Jinja is now a center of adventure. Come and get your adrenaline pumping while rafting on the rapids, kayaking on calmer waters or riding quad bikes through gorgeous terrain.
