Johor Bahru

The last Malaysian city before Singapore, this proud border town offers history and tradition for those who take the time to look.

About

Johor Bahru, or JB for short, was in 1855, and less than a decade later, was made the capital of the Sultanate of Johor. As the last Malaysian city before Singapore, JB has long been known as fiercely proud, but hectic border town. However, recent renovations and the Iskandar development project are radically changing Malaysia’s second largest city. Tradition is still a major part of the city’s identity, and visitors can explore Jalan Tan Hoik Nee, one of JB’s oldest neighborhoods, to enjoy a spectacular mix of Chinese and Colonial architecture. Then there are the centuries-old temples and churches, the Sultan’s former palace, and even the 80-year-old Salahuddin Bakery where you can experience the city’s proud history. Food and shopping are two of JB’s other main draws, and even Singaporean’s flock here for the malls and premium outlets, but if you’re in town after dark, the Pasar Karat flea/night market is the place to be.
