Iceland
Featured in movies ranging from James Bond to Batman, this iceberg-filled lagoon is one of the coolest sights in Iceland.
Jokulsarlon is a glacial lake that formed during the 20th century as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier began a rapid retreat due to rising temperatures. The melting glacier also left chunks of itself behind as it made its retreat, filling the waters with a fleet of icebergs. Each of these giant blocks of ice is uniquely shaped and colored, with streaks of blue and black, making for a breathtakingly beautiful parade as they slowly head out to sea, melting along the way. One of Iceland’s most beautiful natural sights, it’s also a chilling reminder of the effects of climate change.l A short walk away, you’ll find the “Diamond Beach” - a stretch of black sand where crystal-clear remnants of these icebergs wash ashore.
