Located in Innlandet county, the Jutulhogget Canyon was formed approximately 10,400 years ago from the rupture of a proglacial lake’s dam. The powerful force of water rushing out carved out the deep gorge we see today, with its dramatic formation attracting thousands of visitors from around the world. Descend on foot along a steep path and notice the canyon floor covered with a thick layer of scree material, adding to its rugged beauty. The canyon walls themselves host rare types of lichens, creating a unique ecological environment within this geological marvel. In local folklore, Jutulhogget Canyon is said to have been created by a massive troll known as “jutul”, wielding an axe to hew it out of the ground.
