Rwanda
The cradle of the Catholic Church in Rwanda, this small town in the southwest of Kigali is known for its beautiful cathedral and seminary.
Kabgayi sits in the middle of Rwanda’s central plateau and was established as a Catholic Church mission in 1905, leading to the construction of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady and a renowned seminary. The cathedral is a magnificent structure with stained-glass windows and ornate architectural details and houses the bodies of three bishops killed by Rwandan Patriotic Front rebels during the genocide of 1994. Along with the seminary, known for its high-quality education, the cathedral makes Kabgayi a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics. In addition to its religious significance, Kabgayi is also a charming town with stunning natural scenery and a rich cultural heritage. Explore the town's markets, museums, and historic sites, or take in the beauty of the surrounding hills and valleys.
