This pristine monument honors lives lost during the pushback against Nazi forces during the Second World War.
At the crest of a mountaintop sits a sprawling complex designed in contrasting pink and white stone. This is a memorial honoring the Worker’s Battalion that held off German forces during the Second World War as they attempted to recapture the briefly independent city of Užice. While the Nazi forces greatly outnumbered and outpowered the Worker’s Battalion, the group still bought the city enough time for most citizens to evacuate to safer areas. The large white stone obelisk at the heart of the monument signifies this act with the inscription, “Heroes of Kadinjača.” The monument seen today was the result of expansion in the 1960s and 70s after Yugoslavia began a booming period of monument production. The memorial is pristine, with great care taken to prevent graffiti and vandalism. Visitors can enjoy walking around the complex and appreciating the panoramas of the lush green valley below.
