New Zealand
From lounging seals to dramatic views, this rocky coast is nature at its finest.
The Kaikoura Seal Colony is one of the easiest ways to see wild fur seals up close. It’s just a short walk to the rocky beach where the seals relax, breed, and raise their young - an especially welcome sight after a major earthquake completely disrupted the area. Along with the sight (and smell) of the seals, the Kaikoura Peninsula has a number of walking trails to showcase its natural and historic significance. From old whaling sites to a historic graveyard to distant snow-capped peaks, there’s a lot to take in, and a welcome collection of information panels along the walkway explains area’s rich history, geology, flora and fauna.
