The fourth most holy city in the Muslim world, the UNESCO-listed medina is centered around North Africa’s oldest and most influential mosque.
Founded in the 7th century by the Umayyadss, Kairouan quickly established itself as a premier center for Islamic learning. At its heart is the Great Mosque, the oldest in North Africa, which dates back to the founding of the city. This masterpiece of Islamic architecture was where the horseshoe arch was first used in the Islamic world, and its scholars helped it achieve a status comparable to that of the University of Paris in the Middle Ages. While not as large, Kairouan Mosque of the Three Doors presents the oldest surviving sculpted facade of Muslim art. The Barber's Mosque was built in the 17th century atop the tomb of one of the prophet Muhammed’s companions, and is filled with vibrant tile decorations. While these landmarks are draws in themselves, the entire UNESCO-listed medina is an enchanting place to explore, where traditional houses and zaouias beckon to photographers and sightseers with their ornate doors and shuttered balconies.
