This pleasant river valley was used Rivendell in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The 2860 hectare Kaitoke Regional Park stretches across the foothills of the Tararua Range, encompassing steep, bush-clad hills, centuries-old rata, rimu and beech forest, and the Hutt River gorge. Early Maori walking routes cut across this area, connecting the fertile Wairarapa plains with the port of Wellington, and hiking remains a big draw to this day. There are several trail options, some of which are so well graded that they’re suitable for wheelchairs, allowing visitors to swim in refreshing river pools, discover the flora and fauna of the forest, or head up the Ridge Track for wonderful views of the Upper Hutt valley and the spot used as a set for Rivendell in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
