Cyprus
From its charming streets to its UNESCO-listed church, this mountain village is unapologetically enchanting.
Hugging the foothills of the Troodos mountains, Kakopetria is one of Cyprus’ most enchanting villages. Greenery proliferates thanks to the higher altitude, combined with the two rivers that converge in the heart of the village. The narrow streets of the old town are a timeless delight, with traditional wooden balconies and plants and flowers enticing you to explore every nook and cranny. Aside from just enjoying the village’s quaint aesthetic, there are a few landmarks you can seek out, from historic churches adorned with 16th century frescoes to old water mills and even a small park with a waterfall. After you’ve finished exploring the village make sure to save time to visit the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis (St. Nicholas of the Roof) a few kilometers away. Founded in the 11th, this Byzantine church is covered with murals from the 11th to 17th centuries, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
