In the sparse lands north of Shamakhi, a remarkable complex of ancient tombs stand mysteriously, having withstood the test of time.
The Kalakhana Tombs feature nine tombs, varying in condition, with eight still standing and some remaining undamaged—conjuring images of an ancient past, with much left uncovered. Among these tombs, only one bears an inscription providing valuable information about its construction and the identity of the individual interred within. Remains of defensive walls that once encircled three of the tombs have survived, and five out of the nine tombs are encompassed by walls featuring portal entrances. The tombs hold a distinctive place among the architectural monuments of Medieval Azerbaijan due to their unique complex and the relatively short period in which they were built. There is also evidence of a castle having been built at the site of the tomb complex, and a nearby spring. Throw yourself back into the past at this alluring site, filled with unending mystery and unanswered questions.
