Cyprus
Admire a wealth of Byzantine churches in this charming village built around a UNESCO-listed monastery.
The picturesque village of Kalopanayiotis was founded in the 11th century when the good Christian Panayiotis built his home next to the St. John Lambadhistis Monastery. In fact, the village’s name is a derivation of Kalos Panayiotis - literally “Good Panayiotis”. Over the years, more faithful followed suit, and they ended up making one of the prettiest towns in the Troodos Mountains. Wandering the winding streets, you’ll have 6 charming chapels to enjoy. These historic churches have earned Kalopanayiotis the title of “Byzantine destination of Cyprus”. Chief among them is the Ayios Ioannis (St. John) Lambadhistis Monastery. Established in the 10th century, this Byzantine beauty bundles 3 churches around a central courtyard. Inside, you’ll find some amazing frescoes and icons dating back to the 13th century, and a silver reliquary holding the skull of St. John Lambadhistis. Just outside the monastery is an icon museum, housing a treasure trove of Byzantine icons and religious objects.
