This magnificent bronze statue of Amida Buddha stands majestically within the grounds of Kotokuin Temple.
The Kamakura Great Buddha is an iconic symbol of Kamakura with a height of 11.4 meters, making it the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan. Originating from its casting in 1252, the Great Buddha was initially placed within a grand temple hall. Unfortunately, this hall faced destruction multiple times due to typhoons and tsunamis during the 14th and 15th centuries. As a result, the Buddha has been standing exposed to the elements since the late 15th century. Kotokuin, a temple affiliated with the Jodo Sect of Buddhism, hosts the Great Buddha. Visitors can even stand inside the Great Buddha, listening to the outside world while contemplating its serene presence. Visiting hours are from 8:00 to 17:30 (until 17:00 from October to March), with tickets costing 200 yen and an additional 20 yen to enter the Buddha.
