With seven hot wells surrounded by legends and rituals, locally believed to have healing powers, this serene site is an archaeologically protected monument.
Located in Trincomalee, Kanniya Hot Water Springs consists of seven hot wells. Being only 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters) deep, you can clearly see the bottom of each well, and temperatures on average are a steamy 108 Fahrenheit (42 Celsius)! In recent archaeological excavations, a mound was discovered with inscriptions from 1 - 2 centuries AD which revealed the springs were used by Buddhist monks residing in a nearby temple. Many Hindu and Buddhist legends surround these springs, including the Hindu legend of Ravana from the epic Ramayana, who performed his mother’s last rites at this site. It’s said his striking the earth with his sword led to the creation of the hot springs. Tamils perform Hindu rituals here for lost loved ones just as Ravana did. Many locals believe that the waters have healing properties (although not scientifically proven). So grab a bucket and enjoy the hot spring waters. You can witness the phenomenon that after 10-15 buckets of water are drawn out of each spring, the water mysteriously runs out! The site is open 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Monday to Friday and 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. Entrance tickets are not included in our price and must be purchased separately at the site.
