South Africa
Backed by soaring mountains, the only succulent garden in the Southern Hemisphere is a beautiful display of life in an arid ecosystem.
The Karoo Desert Garden covers 154 hectares, but only 11 hectares are actively cultivated - the rest preserves the area’s endemic arid vegetation. A network of pathways winds through the cultivated area, where you’ll find thousands of species, ranging from tree aloes to wild grapes. If you happen to visit in spring, you’ll be treated to the colorful blooms of the mesembs and daisies. The rest of the garden is raw, natural landscape with a variety of rare regional succulents that you can explore on several walking trails. While you’re in the garden, keep an eye out for its more mobile inhabitants, like the shrub hare, grey mongoose, three tortoises species, and a range of other small creatures.
