The ‘Mecca of Tobacco’ has remained essentially unchanged for over 2000 years.
Continuously inhabited since the 7th century BC, Kavala stayed relatively the same size until a 16th century expansion - a layout which than wasn’t changed until the 20th century. The Old Town is still dominated by its 15th century citadel, which offers stupendous views of the harbour below. The cobbled alleys are lined with traditional Byzantine style houses, while cafes and restaurants on the main streets provide scenic stopping points to sit and enjoy some souvlaki and retsina. In the ‘New Town’, closer to the harbour, the neoclassical mansions and tobacco warehouses are eye-catching reminders of why Kavala was once known as the “Mecca of tobacco”. This transformative industry is memorialized at the Tobacco Museum, the walls of which are lined with portraits of tobacco workers.
