Kaymakli Underground City

Cappadocia’s most spread out underground city is a UNESCO-listed demonstration in ancient ingenuity.

About

The Kaymaklı Underground City was likely built by the Phrygians in the 8th-7th centuries BC, though could date as far back as the 2nd millenium BC. Used as a refuge from attackers, a series of secret tunnels led to the city to provide the townsfolk with safe access. Around the 4th century, it was appropriated by early Christians to save them from persecution, and was fitted with a church, graveyard, stables, living spaces and communal kitchens over the years - the first floor was still in use for storage as late as the 1960s! Along with spaces for every conceivable need, Kaymaklı is fitted with an impressive prehistoric ventilation and communication network. Obviously, if you’re claustrophobic or otherwise take issue with combined spaces, this might not be for you.
