Poland
Renowned for its Renaissance architecture, this picturesque village is one of Poland’s artistic hubs.
Dating back to the 11th century, Kazimierz Dolny’s flourished in the 16th and early 17th century thanks to the grain passing through its river port. After the grain trade declined, the town’s development essentially halted, leaving it with its Renaissance urban plan and appearance. In the 19th century, the town’s historic charms were discovered by artists, and it attracted them ever since. Today, this popular holiday destination looks just as it did hundreds of years ago. In the historic heart of town, visitors are treated to streets lined with ornate Renaissance facades, charming thatched roof houses, and in the market square, the town’s iconic wooden well. Throughout the village, a multitude of galleries and studios showcase local crafts artwork, which make for unique souvenirs. Along with historic churches there are also reminders of the town’s Jewish heritage, including an old Synagogue, and the ‘Wailing Wall’, which is made from the tombstones destroyed by the Nazis.
