The rainforest protected by this park is older and more diverse than the Amazon, containing over five percent of the world's species.
Khao Sok National Park covers and area of 739 sq km, including the 165 sq km Cheow Lan Lake, Though it’s not the largest park in the world, the rainforest it protects is an estimated 160 million years old, and estimated to contain over 5% of the world’s species. At Cheow Lan Lake, visitors can hire a longtail boat to head out onto the water and admire the soaring mountains and swirling mists that surround in. Alternatively, there are a network of trails heading into the forest, where you may spot bears, tapirs, gibbons, wild elephants, and maybe even a tiger, along with some 300 bird species and 38 bat varieties. In order to go more than 3km into the forest, a guide is required, which is also the only way to see the endangered Rafflesia kerrii- one of the world’s largest and smelliest flowers.
