An 18th-century Church stands on the site of an ancient Georgian church dating back to the reign of King Vakhtang I of Iberia.
In the Khashmi village within the Sagarejo municipality, St. George Basilica is an architectural gem from the latter half of the 19th century. Over the years, the church has undergone significant transformations, serving the needs of a rural collective farm in the 1930’s to 1980’s and eventually being restored in the latter half of the 1990’s. Constructed using sandstone and crushed stone, the basilica features gravestones from the 1830’s with equestrian inscriptions. The eastern facade displays a relief cross adorned with rhombic braided ornaments, crosses, and stylized flowers. Despite undergoing a period of use as a warehouse during the communist era, the monument has been rehabilitated since the early 21st century, preserving its architectural and cultural significance and remaining steadfast in its dedication to religious reverence.
