Rwanda
This site of austerity commemorates the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and serves as a place of reflection and education for visitors from around the world.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of Rwanda’s tragic past, dedicated to 250,000 victims of the genocide against the Tutsi who are laid to rest on site. The museum provides a comprehensive look at the causes and consequences of the genocide, including the political, social, and economic factors that contributed to the conflict. It also highlights the personal stories of survivors and their families, as well as the efforts of those who worked to prevent or stop the violence. After being guided through the exhibitions, make a small donation for a rose and show your respects to history by laying it on one of the vast concrete slabs of the mass grave. Browse the wall of names, with many of the victims still unidentified, and contemplate the atrocities of the past and efforts towards healing in the somber rose gardens.
