Burundi
This historical site is of great significance in Burundi, tracing treaties of bygone eras and holding the ghosts of kings.
Near the heart of Burundi in the Bujumbura Rural Province, the Kiganda Royal Grounds is a remarkable remnant of the past. Covering approximately 5 hectares, the grounds comprise various structures that were once used for the administration and governance of the Kingdom of Burundi, which gained independence in 1966. It contains fascinating details about the signing of the Treaty between Germans and King Mwezi Gisabo, who ruled during the colonial era from 1850 to 1908 and would be the last independent ruler before colonization. The Kiganda Royal Grounds also feature the grounds where the Kings Mwezi Gisabo, Mutaga Mbikije and other historical political leaders used to gather for their royal inaugurations. Wander through the elegant, well-kept royal grounds and enjoy the royal history of Burundi.
