Uganda
This unassuming brick monument marks the spot Christianity first set foot in Uganda.
The Kigungu Missionary Landing Site is where the French missionaries, Father Simeon Lourdel, and Brother Amans, landed in Uganda on February 17, 1879. Of their party, only these two decided to cross Lake Victoria to spread the gospel. Their work caught the attention of King Muteesa I, who eventually sanctioned the missionaries, and sent canoes to bring the rest of the French caravan across the lake. In a country that is 80% Christian, the Kigungu Missionary Landing Site has become an increasingly important pilgrimage destination.
