Ireland
With its picture-perfect medieval neighborhood wedged between a historic cathedral and castle, this quintessential Irish city is a pleasure to explore.
Kilkenny was founded in the 6th century as an ecclesiastical settlement, and was the site of Ireland’s first witch trial in 1324. Between 1642 and 1649, Kilkenny was the home base for the Irish Catholic Confederation, which helped instigate the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. Things have since settled down, and today the city is famed for its well-preserved architecture. Kilkenny’s massive medieval castle is open to visitors to explore on a self-guided tour, and it’s grounds are a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Across town is the 13th century St. Canice’s Cathedral, which is notable for its size, beautiful stained glass windows, and round tower - one of only two in all of Ireland that visitors can climb. Between these two landmarks is a jumble of cobbled streets and historic buildings known as the “Medieval Mile”. For beer lovers, Kilkenny is home to Smithwicks, Ireland’s oldest brewery, which is open to visitors on a guided tour.
