Ireland
The stone tower at this ruined medieval monastery was the tallest structure in Ireland until the modern age.
Kilmacduagh Abbey was likely founded in the early 7th century by Saint Colman, on land given to him by his cousin King Guaire Aidne mac Colmáin of Connacht. By the 12th century, the abbey was so important that it was made a Bishop’s seat, and the center of the new Diocese of Kilmacduagh. This status was unfortunately short-lived, as after weathering multiple raids, it was finally destroyed by William de Burgh shortly before his death. Rather than repair Kilmacduagh, the local lord Owen O'Heyne founded the abbey of St. Mary de Petra instead. While ruined, it’s possible to make out the remains of an array of medieval buildings, including St Cólmán’s cathedral, the church of St John the Baptist, Our Lady’s church, and the bishop’s residence. The chancel in particular is notable for its sculptural details. However, the standout structure is the 30-meter-tall round tower, which is leaning over about 2 feet.
