Rwanda
Explore a traditional Rwandan royal residence and see how they care for the revered Inyambo cattle.
Though Rwanda ceased to be a monarchy in 1962, its sovereign past can be still be experienced at the King’s Palace, a replica of a traditional royal residence. This beautifully-crafted thatched dwelling shaped like a beehive, with surrounding huts built in the same method, is located near the town of Nyanza, which was once the heart of Rwanda. At this fine example of a Rwandan royal residence, you'll join a guided tour to learn about the various elements of the royal compound. At the museum, a royal tradition is observed by caring for the magnificent Inyambo cattle, which have long and impressive horns. These revered cows are kept at the back of the Palace and are tended to with great care. They have a historical significance as they were used in various rituals. Next to the castle sits the royal residence of King Mutara III Rudahigwa, which was built by the Belgians during their rule and served as the home to the last kings of Rwanda. Although most of the relics were looted during the genocide, the residence still is an interesting place to wander through.
