Kenya
Important long before British arrived, the name is aptly derived from the Luo word for “trade”.
Once an incredibly important trading town, Kisumu suffered a downturn after the collapse of the East African Community, but since it’s revival in 2000 the city began to thrive again. The relaxed atmosphere belies the city’s size, feeling more like a laid-back town. Attractions are many for the passing visitor, from trips on Lake Victoria in the mornings (too windy in the afternoon), to shopping in the one of the flea (Oile, Kibuye) and art markets (Kisumu Art House, Maasai), or a guided tour of Kisumu Museum which covers the culture of Western Kenya. A little further south the Impala Sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, from the impala themselves to hippos to cheatahs. The food is worth a try too; being by the water fish is a huge part of the diet but many world dishes can be enjoyed here, all with a delightful lakeside twist.
