Kiwi North

From tiny birds to living dinosaurs to a historic homestead, this fascinating complex preserves New Zealand’s rich heritage.

About

Set on 25 hectares of volcanic farmland Kiwi North is home to the only Kiwi house in the northland. Here, you can see the country’s famous flightless birds, and at 11am, 1 and 3pm can catch them feeding accompanied by a talk from the keeper. Along with Kiwis, the house offers the rare chance to see the tuatara, a “living dinosaur” that’s remained unchanged for millions of years, and the vibrant green gecko. At the Whangarei Museum, you can learn more about the country’s natural heritage, early settler history, and indigenous culture through the 80,000 items on display. If that’s not enough, there are also Victorian-era buildings like a farmhouse, school, and women’s jail, and even a small train to ride!
