Bosnia and Herzegovina
This 17th century Ottoman bridge was destroyed by the Germans in 1945, but meticulously reconstructed in 2009.
While the town of Konjic is one of the country’s oldest, and dominated by the Neretva river and Prenj mountain, its defining characteristic is the Old Bridge. Constructed under Ottoman rule in 1682, the angular bridge with six slightly pointed arches stood for centuries until the Germans destroyed it to cover their retreat in 1945. In 2009, the bridge was reconstructed into its original state, the grand opening of which saw over 1,500 performers took part in the opening ceremony, including the Turkish military band, and the Turkish whirling dervishes of Konya. Even before its reconstruction, the remains of the Old Stone Bridge were listed National monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
