Cyprus
Admire ancient ruins and amazing views from this hilltop archaeological site.
Sprawled across a limestone plateau, Kourion is said to have been founded by Argives in the Late Bronze Age. During antiquity, it was one of the most powerful of Cyprus’ city-kingdoms, and thrived until it was destroyed by a massive earthquake in 365 AD. Today, the partially restored archaeological site offers a fantastic opportunity to get up close to ancient architecture in an amazing setting. The centerpiece is the Greco-Roman theater, which was built in the 2nd century BC, extended in the 2nd century AD, and is now used for live performances. East of the theater, the covered remains of the “House of Eustolios” showcase four beautiful 5th century mosaics, and a bathing complex with cold, warm, and hot baths. Elsewhere, you’ll find more mosaics to be found at the “House of Achilles” and the “House of the Gladiators”, a portico-lined agora, a public bath, Nymphaeum, and an early Christian basilica. Outside the main site, on the road to Paphos, you can stop to see the Temple of Apollo Hylates and a stadium. Because Kourion is mostly exposed, it’s recommended to bring a hat and water, especially in the summer.
