Though it was severely damaged in the World Wars, the hilltop castle has been lovingly restored into a museum.
Built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle, its name stems from its owner’s title of "von Cronberg". In quintessential Renaissance style, the square layout features four corner towers, and is surrounded by a lovely park, boasting an amphitheatre and lapidarium. Both World Wars saw the castle set aflame, but post-war recovery efforts gradually restored it to its former glory. Inside, visitors can find the Regional Museum Goriški muzej, which houses a collection of paintings, and cultural and historical artefacts. The castle’s south wing has a quiet winter garden and a grotto featuring a statue of Kronos.
