Krusedol Monastery

Visitors can learn more about this monastery’s history housing significant intellectual and artistic figures throughout history.

About

Nestled in the heart of the Fruska Fora Mountain National Park, this Orthodox Monastery has stood on this site since the early 1500s. The monastery was most influential during the 1700s when Srem Bishopric was at the helm and a large monk population occupied the complex and its surrounding estates. A prominent intellectual, Dr. Laza Kostic, lived here in the 1800s to find respite from an unrequited love. After the woman of his affection died, Kostic wrote one of the most famous love songs/poems in Serbia, “Santa Maria della Salute.” The monastery has remained an important site thanks to its mausoleum housing significant personalities throughout Serbian history - including despots such as the Brankovics, King Milan, and more. Visitors can peruse the monastery’s collection of ancient manuscripts and icons to learn more about the historical and cultural significance of this place.
