Latvia
This historic double-feature showcases the full spectrum of local history, from the lives of nobles, to peasant traditions, to Soviet authority.
Built in the 13th century, Krustpils castle was an important point on the road from Rīga - Daugavpils. In the 16th century, Polish king Stephen Bathory gave the estate to Nicholas Korfu, and it remained in his family until the 20th century when it was taken by the Latvian Ministry of defense, and then the Soviet Army. Today, visitors can take a guided tour to learn more about the castle’s history and admire its elegant interiors, or step into the museum to learn about the area’s history, with special attention paid to the Soviet years. From atop the gateway tower, visitors can enjoy panoramic views, and art exhibitions. The nearby open air museum preserves peasant living through a collection of 19th century buildings, including a farmhouse, mill, and smithy, all fully furnished with the traditional tools and furnishings their owners would have had.
