What was once an elite spa with fountains of wine, racetracks and Italian operas was washed away in 1740, although part of that grandeur still remains today.
After Kuks' spa was destroyed by floods in 1740, what remained was turned into a veterans hospital. A visit to the hospital means the opportunity to view the portraits of the original owner and his family, a model of the spa during its zenith and some of the remaining statues of dwarves, which the owner commissioned and feature the faces of his enemies. The lovingly restored eighteenth-century pharmacy is well worth the entrance fee. Many visitors consider the highlight of the visit to be the lapidarium to view the statues of the twelve vices and virtues, which provide a unique insight into the religious and cultural beliefs of the time. With its faintly abandoned air, its unusual history, and fascinating art, Kuks is an intriguing place.
