The world’s loftiest capital is one of South America’s most important cultural centers, preserving its colonial and indigenous heritage among the bustle of modernity.
La Paz was originally founded by the Spanish on a pre-existing Incan settlement before being relocated to its current position. Over its history, the city has been the locus of numerous revolts, be it indigenous uprisings, or sparking the Spanish American Wars of Independence. While it’s since grown into an ever-evolving metropolis, La Paz has remained cemented as one of South America’s most important cultural centers. Dotted throughout the city are colonial-era landmarks like the San Francisco Church, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Plaza Murillo, and Jaén Street. And with a predominantly native Aymara population, indigenous culture is still alive and well. The city is renowned for its unique markets, particularly the Witches' Market, and one of La Paz’ most popular spectacles is watching cholitas (female wrestlers in traditional dress) do battle. To move between districts, hop on one of the aerial tramways to be whisked away.
