Laguna Cuicocha was created by a massive volcanic eruption about 3100 years ago, which formed a water-filled caldera, and four islands. Literally meaning "lake of guinea pigs", its named for the shape of the largest island, which is said to resemble one of these important animals. A hiking trails works its way around the rim of the lake, offering fantastic views of this picturesque formation.
