Lahti

Experience the Nordic lifestyle in the green gateway to the largest lake district in Europe.

About

In the early 20th century, Lahti was dubbed "the Chicago of Finland" because, like its American counterpart, it was a major center for the meat and lumber industries. But Lahti has since turned a new leaf and blossomed into a leader in sustainability. It was even named the European Green Capital in 2021. The city's industrial architecture has been repurposed, and now house restaurants, shops, and cafes, which help feed a vibrant cultural scene. Head to the harbor for cozy cafes, architectural gems, small boutiques, and beautiful views of Lake Vesijärvi. Catch the symphony at the quintessentially Scandinavian Sibelius Hall, or check out one of the city's many museums, which cover everything from art to military medicine. Lahti is also well-known for its quality beer and liquor, so be sure to ask for a Lahden Erikois or Teerenpeli beer, or a Taivaanranta whiskey. If you’re looking to experience the Lake District's signature nature landscapes, head to the Päijänne National Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark just outside the city to enjoy the moss forests, sandy beaches, and crystal clear water.
