Australia
The amphibious aircraft at this secret airbase helped keep Australia safe during WWII.
After Imperial Japan attacked and destroyed a large number of flying boats on the northern coast it was decided to relocate to a southern, inland secret base, and thus the Lake Boga Flying Boat Base was born. After having been integral in defending Australia during the war, it was left more or less unused for 40 years. In a very Aussie way over a few pints of beer down the local pub, it was decided that the old site should be renovated as a memorial to the service men and women who kept Australia safe from invasion. It took 19 years to be fully complete but thus the Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum was born! Here you can find a reconstruction of the underground bunker (copied using old photographs), a museum with many displays and wartime artifacts in the hangar, but pride of place goes to the Catalina PBY5 flying boat, lovingly rebuilt from parts rescued from being scrapped.
