New Zealand
Formed by glacial action, this alpine lake is now a perfect adventure paradise.
Extending nearly 35 kilometers, Lake Hawea lies in a glacial valley formed during the last Ice Age. At its deepest, it plummets to 392 meters and covers an area of 142 square kilometers. Nearby in a parallel glacial valley is Lake Wanaka, which at their closest point, is only 1000 meters from Hawea. The lake is dammed by a terminal moraine which was created around 10,000 years ago! Nowadays it is a perfect area for the adventurer, as it is full of great locations to swim, hike, boat and fish. The lake is blessed with surrounding rugged, snow peaked mountains and beautifully clear water, which provide unforgettable sights. All of this is just about a 15 minute scenic drive from Wanaka.
