Lake Manapouri

Lake Manapouri was formed during the last Ice Age when glaciers carved out huge swaths of earth. With a depth of 444 meters, it’s the second deepest in New Zealand, and an impressive testament to the power of glaciers. The lake is also an icon for environmental consciousness among New Zealanders, as they rallied to protect it in the 1950s when plans to flood the lake for power generation were revealed. It’s easy to see why people would fight to preserve the area: surrounded by soaring peaks and lush forest, and dotted with 33 small islands the lake is undoubtedly one of the most pleasant outings in the country. Arriving at the lake, you have the choice of strolling along the beach and relaxing, or, if you want to stretch your legs, taking the water taxi ($25pp) across the Waiau river to explore the bird-filled forest. Or you can rent a kayak, take a boat cruise, or make an excursion to the Southern Hemisphere’s largest underground power station. Adjust your stop time accordingly.
