There are many words to describe spending time at Lake Matheson, but the first that comes to mind is serenity. Nature has come together in a way of perfect harmony to create a beautiful and absolutely still lake, whose reflection is of the surrounding mountains towering above it. Natural matter that has been gathering from the surrounding forest floor creates the earthy color of the lake, which is why it looks so calm. The peaks you can see reflected in these waters are Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Mount Tasman. You can get the best views by taking a 90 minute walk around the lake or you can take a 40 minute round trip walk from the car park to the jetty view point. Perfect for a relaxing walk and a great photo op!
